The Eoin Morgan-led England blew away the Afghanistan bowlers away on Tuesday in the game played at Manchester’s Old Trafford. Recovering from a back spasm, Morgan smashed a 71-ball 148 that included a record 17 sixes. Joe Root (88) and Jonny Bairstow (90) also made big contributions with the bat as the hosts finished the innings with 397/6 in their 50 overs. The ace leg-spinner Rashid Khan was targeted by the English batsmen as he was hit for 11 sixes which included seven by Morgan.
All the major stats and records created during England’s power-packed innings:
8.1 – Rashid Khan conceded his 100th run with the ball in this game in 8.1 overs; the fastest century with the ball in ODI cricket. Brian Vitori of Zimbabwe gave away 100 runs in 8.3 overs against New Zealand in the 2012 Napier ODI.
17 – Number of sixes Eoin Morgan has hit in this game; the most by any player in an ODI inning. He surpassed the 16 maximums hit by Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle previously. In List A cricket, only D’Arcy Short (23 vs Queensland in 2018) hit more sixes than Morgan in an innings.
25 – England hit 25 sixes during their innings; the most by any team in an ODI inning. In the process, they broke their own record of 24 sixes from the ODI against Windies earlier this year.
57 – Morgan’s 57-ball century is the 4th fastest century in the World Cup. This is the fastest CWC ton by an England player bettering Jos Buttler’s 75-ball ton against Pakistan earlier in this tournament.
110 – The 110 runs conceded by Rashid Khan are the most by any player in a World Cup game. New Zealand’s Martin Snedden gave away 105 runs in the 12 overs he bowled against England in the 1983 World Cup.
110 – Rashid Khan became the first spinner to concede 100+ runs in a Men’s ODI game. Muttiah Muralitharan conceded 99 runs in the 2006 Sydney ODI against Australia. The 110 runs Rashid conceded are also the joint 2nd most in a Men’s ODI game.
Mick Lewis of Australia went for 113 in the 2006 Johannesburg ODI while Wahab Riaz also gave away 110 runs in the 2016 Nottingham ODI also against England. The leg-spinners Cara Murray and Shazia Khan conceded 119 and 111 runs respectively; the only instances when 100+ runs were conceded in Women’s ODI cricket.

138 – The 138 sixes that Morgan has hit in the ODIs as England captain are the most by any captain in this format. The 17 sixes in this game helped Morgan move to the top spot by surpassing MS Dhoni (126) and Ricky Ponting (123). The 185 sixes he hit in International cricket as a skipper are the 2nd behind Dhoni’s 211 as Indian captain. Morgan went past Ricky Ponting (171) and Brendon McCullum (170).
189 – The 189-run partnership between Morgan and Joe Root is England’s highest for any wicket in a World Cup. They surpassed the 176-run stand between Keith Fletcher and Dennis Amiss for the 2nd wicket against India during the inaugural CWC game in 1975.
211 – Eoin Morgan became the 8th player to hit 200 sixes in ODI cricket with 6th of the 17 maximums he struck in this game. He is the 3rd fastest among those eight players as he hit his 200th six in the 210th ODI innings. Only Rohit Sharma (187) and Shahid Afridi (195) needed fewer innings for 200 ODI sixes.
397/6 – England’s total in this game is the 6th highest total for any team in the World Cup. This is also England’s highest CWC total surpassing the 386/6 they posted against Bangladesh about ten days ago.
