Australia skipper Steve Smith completed 6000 Test runs during the second day’s play of the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney at the SCG on Friday. The juggernaut continues for him as he also became the joint second fastest to the feat, again only behind the all-time great Don Bradman. He had reached the landmark in just 68 outings and is still untouched at the top. On the other hand, Smith did it in his 111th innings for Australia and is looking good for more.
The captain has once again looked in sublime touch much like the way he has in this series and is all set to notch up yet another century. The legend of Smith is growing steadily the way he is batting currently and seems to be in the zone. Though on his way to 6000 Test runs he left behind some of the legendary players who played the longest format of the game. With age on his side, he might well finish as the best ever batsman in whites.
Who are the other players in the list?
Steve Smith levelled with the former West Indies player Garry Sobers who had also reached the landmark in 111 innings. The next on the charts is Wally Hammond who took 6000th run while in the middle of his 114th knock for England. Smith has already shattered a lot of records and is surpassing the greats of the game quite easily which proves there is no chink in his batting technique. The poms at least, haven’t found a way past his defences in the five matches as the only time he was dismissed early was in the day-night Test match at Adelaide.
Fastest to 6000 Test runs
The former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara and England legend Len Hutton are the next in this unique list as they reached the milestone in 116 outings for their respective countries. Surely, Smith is not stopping here and soon he will be one of the fastest to 10,000 runs in the traditional format if he continues to play in the same vein. For now, he is closing in on yet another half-century and would look to convert it into a big one on the third day.
