Team India began the year 2017 in a spanking fashion by defeating England in the 1st ODI of the 3 match series at Pune yesterday. It was a brilliant display of batsmanship by captain Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav who scored brilliant centuries to ensure India chased down a mammoth target of 351 with 11 balls to spare. It was a dramatic turnaround by the Men in Blue after being reduced to 63/4 at one stage.
Kedar Jadhav who was playing in only his 13th ODI joined the league of some extraordinary Indian batsmen who has scored the fastest centuries for India. Courtesy his 65 ball ton, the “Pocket-sized dynamite” became the 6th fastest centurion in Indian colours and guided his team to a sensational come from behind victory.
It was exceptional strokeplay by the Maharashtra lad who struck 12 fours and 4 gigantic sixes during his breathtaking innings of 120 of a mere 76 deliveries. Despite getting cramps, the man stood tall and played some audacious shots and the same thing was acknowledged by Kohli as well. Kohli said that he himself was quite surprised with some of the shots Jadhav played.
Jadhav who is the captain of Maharashtra expressed his delight after scoring a century in front of his home crowd. He said that it was always special to score a century in front of his parents and other family members. Jadhav’s parents were there on the ground and cheered for him the whole way through.
The list of fastest centuries by Indian batsmen is headed by none other than India’s new appointed captain across all formats, Virat Kohli. The knock came against the mighty Aussies in 2013 when India was chasing a mammoth total. This list was bound to have Virender Sehwag who has played some astonishing innings in his lifetime. His 60 balls century against New Zealand in 2008 comes 2nd in the list followed by another Virat Kohli knock. Kohli had scored another match-winning century in the same series against the Aussies where India was again chasing in excess of 350.

Before Virender Sehwag broke the record for the fastest century in 2009, former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin was at the top of the ladder. Azhar smashed his way to a 62 balls century against New Zealand way back in 1988/89 and remained in the pinnacle for the next 20 years. Yuvraj Singh’s 64 balls century against England at Rajkot in 2009 comes in the 5th position.
The list features two more knocks by Virender Sehwag against Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively. Yusuf Pathan occupies the 9th position with his 68 balls century against the mighty Proteas at Centurion in 2011.
