Shubman Gill’s dominant performances in the Youth ODI cricket continues as he struck a crucial 86 in the quarter-final against Bangladesh to help India to reach the semi-final of the Under-19 World Cup. The Indian No.3 batsman walked out to bat after India, who chose to bat first, lost the wicket of Manjot Kalra. Gill put on crucial stands on his way to his 6th fifty in the Youth ODI cricket in his 13th innings in which he scored three centuries as well.
The right-hander shared an 86-run stand with his skipper Prithvi Shaw and a 74-run stand for the 3rd wicket with Harvik Desai to take India towards a winning total on a tricky track. Shubman’s innings of 86 that came off 94 balls including nine boundaries. With this innings, he completed 1000 runs in Youth ODI cricket in only his 13th innings to become the quickest to the milestone in this format. Thus, he broke the record of Unmukt Chand, who completed 1000 runs in his 17th innings.
Gill’s fifty in this game is his 5th consecutive fifty-plus score in Youth ODIs making him only the 6th player and the 2nd Indian after Gaurav Dhiman to achieve this feat. With the 3rd straight fifty in this U19 CWC, Shubman became the 5th Indian with three successive fifty-plus in the Under-19 World Cup. In the 13 Youth ODI innings, Gill’s lowest score is just 24 and been dismissed below 60 runs only on three occasions. Combining the Men’s, Women’s and Youth International formats, Gill reaching 1000 runs in Youth ODI cricket in his 13th innings is the joint 2nd fastest by any player in any International format.
Herbert Sutcliffe and Sir Everton Weekes needed 12 innings for reaching their 1000-run milestone in Test cricket while Sir Donald Bradman also needed 13 innings for 1000 Test runs. Shubman Gill’s batting average currently reads 101.6 which makes him the only player with 100+ batting average in any format with 1000+ runs. Bradman averages 99.94 in Test cricket which is the 2nd best average for any player in a format with 1000+ runs.
