Stats: Five Indian bowlers claim 10 wickets in the ongoing Test series against England
The experienced Ishant Sharma leads the wicket-takers list of the visiting side with 13 wickets to his name
Without a doubt, in the recent few years, Indian pacers stood in to give tough competition to the overseas pacers. Despite the team not converting the pacers’ contributions often into wins outside Asia, their performances have been applauded by one and all. Their success was the reason behind India’s win in Johannesburg and Nottingham Test matches earlier this year. They have been consistent throughout the year with their wicket-taking abilities.
In the ongoing five-match Test series in England, the experienced Ishant Sharma leads the wicket-takers list of the visiting side with 13 wickets to his name while Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya took exactly ten wickets apiece. Thus, they recorded the first ever instance in Indian Test history where four different fast bowlers bagged ten and more wickets in the same Test series. Bumrah was the last of the four to get to ten wickets when he dismissed Stuart Broad.
Soon after Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin also completed ten wickets in this series by cleaning Sam Curran’s woodwork. Thus, this series in England became the first for India where as many as five bowlers bagged ten and more scalps. There were as many as 11 instances of four Indian bowlers taking ten and more wickets in a Test series in the past with the last instance being the 2008 home Test series of four matches against Australia.
Talking about pacers’ achievement, there are only five occasions in the past that three pacers have claimed ten and more wickets in a Test series. Three Indian pacers took 10+ wickets for the first time in 1979/80 Test series at home against Pakistan which was also the only such instance at home thus far. Bumrah, Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 10+ wickets in the away South Africa series earlier this year which was the first such instance in more than 15 years.
