Stats: Hashim Amla completes 8000 runs in Test cricket

South African batsman Hashim Amla completed 8000 runs in Test cricket in the 2nd Test match against England at Nottingham. Amla, who walked out to bat while he was 8 runs away from the milestone after the fall of Dean Elgar’s wicket, completed the feat with a boundary behind the square on the on-side off Mark Wood when he was on 6 runs off 25 balls. The 34-year old became the 30th player in Test cricket to complete 8000 runs and the 4th player from South Africa.

However, Amla needed 178 innings to complete the milestone, the most among the four South African players who have completed 8000 Test runs. Only 11 of the 29 other players who completed 8000 runs in Tests have taken more innings than Amla’s 178 for the milestone.

He needed 109 and 128 innings to score 5000 and 6000 runs in Test cricket respectively and thus was the 2nd fastest and the joint-fastest South African to the milestone. But he needed 50 innings to crawl from 6000 to 8000 runs. Amla took 26 innings from 7000 to 8000 runs, the 2nd most he took between two milestone marks. He played 32 innings for completing his 1000 Test runs. He played 24 innings between 6000 and 7000 runs as well.
