Stats: Highest individual innings in a losing cause in the Champions Trophy
Shikhar Dhawan entered the list with his knock of 125.
Shikhar Dhawan continued his amazing form in the Champions Trophy and so in ICC ODI events but he couldn’t celebrate it much as India failed to bag a win with Sri Lanka chasing down the target of 322 in the 8th game of the tournament.
Dhawan scored 125 in 128 balls which included 15 fours and a six by sharing a 138-un stand with Rohit Sharma for the opening wicket and later 82 runs with MS Dhoni for the 4th wicket. Dhawan’s innings of 125 now stands at 4th in the list of highest individual scores coming in losing cause.
Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower score a brilliant 145 in a chase against India in 2002 but his side fell short of the target. The South African captain Graeme Smith fought with a brilliant 141 in a big chase against England in 2009 to take his side to semis but failed to do either.
Tamim Iqbal’s 128 in the first game of this tournament against England at the same venue is the 3rd highest individual score coming in a losing cause. Prior to Tamim and Dhawan’s tons, the last time a century in the Champions Trophy came in a losing cause was of West Indies’ Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo when they hit tons in the same game against England in 2006 at Ahmedabad.
Overall, Dhawan’s century was only the 13th in the Champions Trophy which came in vain and only the 2nd one by an Indian. The other century by an Indian in CT to come in losing cause was Sourav Ganguly’s 117 against New Zealand in the 2000 CT final. His innings of 117 currently stands at no.5 in the list of highest individual scores in CT in a losing cause.
