Bangladesh’s batting was under scrutiny during the Test series especially the senior batsmen who failed to avoid batting collapses in all four innings. However, the showed the difference when they returned to ODI format as Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan stepped up with big contributions. Tamim scored an unbeaten 130 while Shakib scored 97 by sharing a 207-run stand for the 2nd wicket after they lost a wicket on the score of one run.
Thus, the experienced pair became only the 2nd in Bangladesh ODI history to share a double century partnership. During the last year’s Champions Trophy game, Shakib shared a 224-run stand for the 5th wicket with Mahmudullah against New Zealand. The pair took out Bangladesh from jaws of a defeat having lost four wickets for 33 runs. This marathon stand helped Bangladesh to qualify to the semi-final of an ICC tournament for the first time.
This is only the 3rd double century stand in the ODI format for the 2nd wicket coming after the team lost their first wicket for one or zero runs. Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels’ record 372-run stand came after the Windies lost their first wicket without a run on the board. Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott added 250 after they were 1/1 against Bangladesh in the 2010 ODI game. Tamim-Shakib pair batted exactly 43 overs making it the 8th longest stand in this format where known.
Among the 132 double century partnerships recorded till date in ODI cricket, the partnership run rate of Tamim and Shakib is the 2nd lowest. The pair scored runs at a rate of 4.81 making it the 2nd 200+ ODI stand coming under five runs an over. Shivnarine Chanderpaul and SC Williams put on an unbeaten 200-run stand against India in 1997 Bridgetown ODI at a rate of 4.47 per over to help Windies register a 10-wicket win. The pair needed 44.4 overs to chase down the target of 200 all by themselves.
