India Under-19s, the champions of the ICC Under-19s CWC 2018 are on the course of defending their title as they make it to the semi-final of the 2020 U19 CWC. On Tuesday, India thumped the 3-time champions Australia Under-19s by 74 runs in the 1st quarter-final. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 62 and Atharva Ankolekar’s unbeaten 55 played a key role in powering India to 233/9 on what seemed to be tricky pitch in the first half.

India came out all guns blazing in the field and picked three wickets in the very first over of the chase. Kartik Tyagi’s 4-wicket haul left the Aussies at 68/5 by 21st over. However, the opening batsman Sam Fanning kept the team in the chase with a 127-ball 75. The equation came down to 85 runs from the last ten overs but the Australians lost their last five wickets for just 10 runs.

Akash Singh took three wickets out of the last five including cleaning up the No.10 and No.11 batsmen. This quarter-final win was India’s 10th in succession in the Under-19s Cricket World Cups which is now the longest streak for any team in the history of the tournament. Thus, they broke the record held by Australia with nine consecutive wins across 2002 and 2004 editions.

Most consecutive wins for a team in Under-19s Cricket World Cup:

Australia won all eight matches they played in the 2002 edition and started the 2004 edition with a win. It was India’s record of 8 wins between 2000 and 2002 which Australia broke two years later. India had streaks of 8 consecutive wins across 2008-2010 and 2012-2014 during the period where they won the titles. Bangladesh and Pakistan are other teams to win 8+ successive matches in the tournament.

This victory over the Australia team is also India’s 200th win in Youth ODI cricket; the first team to achieve this feat. The team with the second-most number of Youth ODI wins is Pakistan with 151. The Pakistan Under-19s completed 150 wins in this format with their first win of the ongoing tournament. India’s win-loss ratio of 3.571 in Youth ODI cricket was nearly twice that of the next best Pakistan (1.798).
