Stats: India's record collapse and record comeback
It looked all easy for India when Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were batting together but things crumbled in no time.
The Pallekele ODI between Sri Lanka and India would stand among the most interesting 50 overs matches ever as the Indian chase witnessed a dominating start by the openers, a 7-wicket collapse powered by an off-spinner who bowled googlies and a sensible 8th wicket partnership which took the chasing side to victory.
It looked all easy for India when Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were batting together putting on a 109-run stand that too at a quick pace for the opening wicket. Rohit scored 54 while Dhawan fell one short of his 7th consecutive ODI fifty-plus score against Sri Lanka. Kedar Jadhav, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul failed to read the googly from the off-spinner as they got bowled for single digits.
All of a sudden, India were 109/0 to 131/7 with MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the crease. Both the players batted sensibly with the required run rate, not a concern due to the start they had. Bhuvneshwar brought up his maiden ODI fifty while Dhoni scored an unbeaten 45 to take Team India home.
India’s 231-run partnership stands among the top 10 lowest scores in ODI cricket which included two 100-run partnerships. All the top ten lowest ODI totals with multiple century stands have come during chases.
