Jason Behrendorff produced one of the best spells by an Australian bowler in the T20 International cricket as the left-arm pacer removed India’s top four in a space of his three overs in the powerplay. He spoiled the International debut of Guwahati‘s Barsapara Cricket Stadium as the 38,000 plus fans who turned up for the games were disappointed to watch their batting heavyweights get out cheaply and the team was handed a huge defeat.
After getting hit for boundaries twice in the first three deliveries of the game’s first over, Behrendorff brought a delivery back into Rohit Sharma to trap him in front. A similar delivery at the end of the over yielded him the wicket of Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who bagged his first duck in the format in his 48th innings. Behrendorff dismissed Manish Pandey and Shikhar Dhawan in his following overs to see the back of India’s top four inside the first five overs.
Thus, he became the first Australian to take a 4-wicket in the powerplay overs of a Twenty20 International game. Overall, he is the 8th Australian to take a 4-wicket haul in T20I cricket and the 8th player to do the same against India in this format. Captain David Warner bowled him through in the opening spell and the left-armer finished with the figures of 4-0-21-4. These are the 5th best bowling figures for an Australian in T20Is. James Faulkner is the only Australia to take a 5-wicket haul in T20I which he did in the WT20 against Pakistan. In the last six years, Behrendorff’s 4/21 are the 2nd best for an Australian behind Faulkner’s 5-
