Stats: Kumar Sangakkara goes past MS Dhoni's record as a wicketkeeper in T20s

While MS Dhoni set a new record every time he played a match on the Sri Lankan tour, his record was overhauled by Kumar Sangakkara in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) today. The former Sri Lankan player went past Dhoni’s run tally in Twenty20 cricket as a wicketkeeper during the Eliminator game of the CPL 2017 season played at Tarouba.

Sangakkara went past Dhoni’s 5073 runs in T20s, during his unbeaten innings of 57 for Jamaica Tallawahs against Guyana Amazon Warriors. The Tallawahs’ skipper, who also took up the keeping responsibilities, aggregated 379 runs during the tournament and completed 5000 Twenty20 career runs while playing as a wicketkeeper.

The 39-year-old, with his 38-ball 57* which included seven fours in the Eliminator, extended his tally to 5118 runs to go past Dhoni. Kamran Akmal is the only other wicketkeeper with 4000 T20 runs as the Pakistani scored 4061 runs in his career so far in the games he kept wickets.

Kumar Sangakkara also went past Adam Gilchrist on the list of most runs by a keeper-captain in the T20 format with the help of the 379 runs he scored in the 5th edition of CPL. Sangakkara, with 2512 runs, now stands 2nd behind MS Dhoni, who sealed his position at the top with 4653 runs. Gilchrist slipped down to the 3rd spot in the list with 2232 runs as a keeper-captain. Morne van Wyk is the only other player with 2000 runs in Twenty20 format while keeping wickets and leading the team at the same time.

Dhoni has played a record 255 Twenty20 games as a wicketkeeper and has led the team in 231. No player other than the former Indian skipper has played 100 T20s in both capacities as keeper-captain. Sangakkara’s fifty in the CPL game was his 17th as a keeper-captain, equaling MS Dhoni’s tally.
