Mayank Agarwal continued to hunt down the records in the Indian domestic circuit though he couldn’t make into the Indian squad for the Nidahas Trophy. The Karnataka player stood out as the leading run-getter of 2017/18 season’s Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He had a decent run at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy also as he completed 2000 runs in the season with the Irani Trophy and Deodhar Trophy still to be played.
The 27-year-old’s dream run started from November where he scored 1000 runs in a month to become the first Indian to score 1000 FC runs in a calendar month. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Mayank scored a total of 723 runs which are 300 runs more than the next best. He also set the record for most runs in an edition of Vijay Hazare Trophy by surpassing Dinesh Karthik’s aggregate of 607 runs in the 2016/17 season. Mayank Agarwal also became the first Indian player to score 700 runs in a List A tournament.
Sachin Tendulkar’s 673 runs in the 2003 Cricket World Cup are the previous most by an Indian in a List A tournament/series. Mayank also became the 2nd player to be the leading run-getter in both the Inter-State FC and List A tournaments in the same season. R Vijay Bharadwaj, also from Karnataka, achieved this feat by topping the Ranji Trophy and Ranji Trophy One-Day tournaments in the 1998/99 season.
At end of his final innings in this Vijay Hazare Trophy, Mayank scored 2141 runs across Inter-State tournaments in 2017/18 to become the first player to aggregate 2000 runs in an Indian domestic season. He struck eight hundreds and nine fifties in these three tournaments and could feature in a few more in the final month of this season. In this process, the opener surpassed Shreyas Iyer, who aggregated 1947 runs in the 2015/16 season.
Excluding the International matches and the games played for the ‘A’ teams, only seven players managed to score more than 1700 runs in an Indian season. With Mayank ignored for the Indian national side, he is expected to play the coming Irani Trophy and Deodhar Trophy where he could add few more runs under his belt. The Karnataka opener now has a very good chance to set a new record for most runs scored in professional cricket (FC+List A+T20) in a single season in India.
