England racked up a colossal 397 for six in their 50 overs versus Afghanistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The Three Lions’ batsmen came out firing on all cylinders and gave their opponents very little to cheer about. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root scored 90 and 88 respectively, but the knock of substance came from their skipper Eoin Morgan, who came into the game after a back injury.

The 32-year-old walked out to bat after James Vince and Bairstow laid the platform and they had 164 runs on the board in 29.5 overs. Morgan was expected to carry on the good work and he did the same with expertise. The Englishman got to his half-century off 36 balls and then notched his century off a mere 57 balls, thereby breaking Jos Buttler’s record of the fastest ton by an English batter in the World Cup which was off 75 deliveries.

After getting the masterful ton, he accelerated even harder and went on to amass 148 runs off 71 balls before being dismissed by his opposite number Gulbadin Naib. En route his awe-inspiring knock, the experienced campaigner smacked four boundaries and as many as 17 sixes. He was extremely severe on Rashid Khan, who ended up conceding 110 runs in his nine overs, giving away 11 sixes.

Morgan hits the most sixes in an ODI inning

Courtesy of the six-hitting spree in Manchester, Morgan also smacked the most number of sixes in an innings in the history of One-Day Internationals. The record was previously held by three cricketers- Rohit Sharma (India), AB de Villiers (South Africa) and Chris Gayle (Windies)- who had hit 16 sixes each in one particular outing. The Dublin-born Morgan smacked Naib for a maximum to carve his name in the elite list.

While Sharma got the record in 2013 versus Australia, De Villiers and Gayle reached the milestones against Windies and Zimbabwe in 2015 respectively. In the current year, Gayle and Thisara Perera entertained the crowds with 14 and 13 sixes against England and New Zealand respectively.

The list also includes the names of former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson and the Black Caps’ all-rounder Corey Anderson. While Watson smacked 15 sixes versus Bangladesh in 2011, Anderson smoked 14 of them versus the Windies in 2014.
