India equalled West Indies’ record of hitting the most sixes in a T20I innings by hitting 21 sixes batting first against Sri Lanka in the 2nd T20I in Indore. It was an absolute belter of a surface at the Holkar Cricket Stadium and the Indian openers went on a rampage as they smashed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all corners of the ground. The captain Rohit Sharma, in particular, was in a dismantling mood as he hit everything from the middle of the bat and kept exploring the 2nd and the 3rd tier of the stands on a regular basis.
Rohit completed his hundred off just 35 deliveries and when he did that, there were still 9 overs left in the game which put the possibility of the first ever T20 double hundred in perspective, but unfortunately the Mumbai opener glided a slower ball bouncer to the short third man fielder at the score of 118 leaving the crowd in a state of disbelief. Before getting dismissed, Rohit hit 10 sixes and 12 fours and finished with a strike rate of almost 275 which was astonishing, to say the least.
Rohit’s opening partner KL Rahul whose name is generally not associated with power hitting was also in a different zone tonight as he registered a total of 8 maximums to his name and like Rohit, he also hit them way back into the stands. The difference between the six-hitting of the two openers was that while Rohit’s sixes were purely based on timing, Rahul was generating power with the flick of his wrist at the last moment.
He scored 89 off just 49 balls which was completely overshadowed by his partner’s mind-boggling effort. Towards the end of the innings, India’s finishers MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya deposited a few over the boundary ropes to take the tally of sixes in the innings to 21 which was equal to West Indies’ tally that they had achieved in a T20I game against India at the Lauderhill Ground in the USA last year.
