Stats: Most sixes in a calendar year in international cricket

Without a shade of doubt, India’s opener Rohit Sharma is one of the most dangerous batsmen in world cricket at the moment. He has asserted his dominance in limited overs cricket at the opening slot, and has destroyed many an opposition with his knack of scoring huge hundreds – and even double hundreds on occasions. And speaking of destruction, Rohit’s bat has done some significant damage to the white cricket ball as well.

One too many stats to digest!

For the second consecutive year now, the 31-year old batsman has hit the most number of international sixes. While batting in the second T20I against the Windies, Rohit achieved the remarkable feat at India’s newest international venue in Lucknow. Playing his 36th international match of the year, he deposited the ball into the stands a whopping 69 times, which also happens to be the most number of sixes by an international cricketer ever in a calendar year.

This staggering feat came en route his 4th T20I hundred, which also made him the batsman with the most T20I hundreds, going past New Zealand’s Colin Munro. And as if Rohit had planned to unleash all these stats on Diwali, he added one more, becoming the highest run-scorer for India in T20I cricket.

In 2017, it was the same Rohit Sharma who had topped the charts for the most international sixes. Off 32 international games, he had slapped 65 sixes, bettering the mighty AB de Villiers’ record of 63 international sixes in 2015. The list also includes the likes of Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, Shahid Afridi and Brendon McCullum to name a few. Way back in 1998, it was India’s legend Sachin Tendulkar who held that record with as many as 51 international sixes.

Rohit finished the first innings at Lucknow unbeaten on 111 off just 61 deliveries, a fearsome innings laced with 8 fours and 7 sixes. It must also be noted that Rohit Sharma still has a few international appearances to make in this year against Australia.
