Taruwar Kohli has been a key figure in the Mizoram line-up ever since their existence in the Indian domestic circuit. Taruwar was part of India’s victorious team in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup led by his namesake Virat Kohli. He found it tough to find place regularly in the Punjab team for nearly a decade. However, he moved to Mizoram at the start of 2018/19 season and has been a consistent performer with bat and also with the ball when required.
Taruwar amassed a total of 758 runs across 15 innings in the 2018/19 Ranji Trophy at an average of 63.17. He also struck three centuries and four fifties. He began the 2019/20 season in a grand fashion scoring an unbeaten 307 in the 2nd round against Arunachal Pradesh. He thus became the first batsman to score a triple century in this Ranji season.
This was his 2nd triple ton in first-class cricket as he struck an unbeaten 300 in the 2012/13 season for Punjab against Jharkhand. Taruwar Kohli thus joined a rare list of Indians to score multiple triple centuries in first-class cricket. The Saurashtra players Ravindra Jadeja and Cheteshwar Pujara are the only Indians to three FC triple tons. Taruwar was playing in only his 39th first-class match this week. Jadeja also got his 2nd FC 300 in the 39th match of his career.
Most triple centuries by Indians in first-class cricket:
Karun Nair, who joined this list with his triple hundred in a Test match, was playing in his 40th first-class game only. Overall, Taruwar Kohli became only the 5th player in the history of Ranji Trophy to score more than one triple hundred. Jadeja scored all his three FC 300s for Saurashtra in Ranji and is the only player to achieve this feat. VVS Laxman, Wasim Jaffer and Cheteshwar Pujara are the other three players in this list.
However, Kohli’s knock was not enough for securing an outright win for Mizoram against Arunachal. His unbeaten 307 helped Mizoram pile on 620/9 in response to Arunachal’s total of 343. In their 2nd essay, Arunachal Pradesh scored 417/5 before both the teams agreed for a draw.
Rahul Dalal outscored Taruwar as the Arunachal batsman aggregated a record 383 runs. He scored 178 in the first innings and an unbeaten 205 in the 2nd innings to avoid an innings defeat.
