Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, MS Dhoni is all set to achieve a new milestone, when he features in the 4th One-Day International against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo as it will be his 300th ODI game. Dhoni has featured in 14 ODIs at this venue with the 36-year-old has made more ODI appearances at Dhaka (17) and Dambulla (16).
The former Indian captain has played 299 ODIs so far with 199 of them as captain which are the 3rd most caps for any captain. The 3rd ODI of the series at Pallekele was Dhoni’s 100th match as a player (non-captain). Dhoni is now one short of becoming the 20th player in the history to feature in 300 ODI matches.
He will be the 6th Indian to play the 300 ODIs after Sachin Tendulkar (463), Rahul Dravid (344), Mohammad Azharuddin (334), Sourav Ganguly (311) and the latest entrant Yuvraj Singh (304). However, this encounter won’t be Dhoni’s 300th ODI appearance for India as he played three matches for the Asia XI against Africa XI.
The Premadasa Stadium will be an ideal venue for the 36-year-old to play the milestone match as he has scored 518 ODI runs at the venue, the 2nd most in his career second only to 591 runs that he has scored at Dhaka. Dhoni effected 19 dismissals as well at Colombo which is the 2nd most number of dismissals for him at a venue behind the record of 26 dismissals at Dambulla.
Dhoni is currently the 14th highest run-getter overall and recently became the 4th highest run-scorer for India surpassing former captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Among the 19 players with 300 and more ODI appearances, only five players have scored more runs than Dhoni who has 9608 runs while playing their 300th ODI match. Brian Lara (299), Mohammad Yousuf (288) and Adam Gilchrist (287) who didn’t feature in 300 ODIs scored more than Dhoni in their respective careers.
