Stats: MS Dhoni becomes the first wicketkeeper to effect 100 stumpings
As he stumped Akila Dhanajaya off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling, Dhoni finally completed the milestone.
MS Dhoni has been dealing in records ever since he landed in the Sri Lanka for the limited-overs leg of the tour as he features in the 5-match ODI series and one-off T20I. The former Indian skipper broke the record for the most number of not outs in ODIs and also in International cricket during this tour. He also featured in his 300th ODI match, becoming the most capped wicketkeeper in International history and now became the first ever wicketkeeper to effect 100 stumpings in the One-Day Internationals.
Dhoni, with a stumping in the 1st ODI, equalled Kumar Sangakkara’s 99 stumpings but had to wait for his 100th and the record breaking one till the 5th ODI. As he stumped Akila Dhananjaya off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling, Dhoni finally completed the milestone and went past the Sri Lankan legend.
Most stumpings for a wicketkeeper in ODI cricket:
Dhoni’s stumpings tally initiated in his debut ODI series against Bangladesh in late 2004 when he stumped Rajin Saleh and Mashrafe Mortaza while master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was the bowler. The 36-year-old now holds the record for most stumpings as a wicketkeeper in International cricket with 160 of them on his name. Sangakkara stands next to Dhoni on this list with 139 stumpings.

Dhoni is also one of the four players to effect 100+ stumpings in List A cricket with Steven Rhodes being, the first of the four players as the England player completed his 100 List A stumpings back in 1999. The Asian players, Moin Khan and Kumar Sangakkara are part of the 4 men elite list. No player so far has effected 100 stumpings in Twenty20 format but 90 have done it in the first-class cricket. England played John Hammond, who was an occasional wicketkeeper, was the first of the 90 players as he completed his 100 stumpings in FC way back in 1807.
