Stats: Pakistan’s record in the semi-finals
Considering the past record and their strength Pakistan would want to bat first.
By defeating Sri Lanka in a thriller in the last group game of 2017 Champions Trophy, Pakistan made it to the semi-finals of an ICC event for the first time in 5 years. Their last appearance in semi-finals of an ICC tournament was in the 2012 World T20 while their last semi-final appearance in an ICC ODI event was in 2011 World Cup, which also featured 3 teams from the sub-continent. This is the 14th time Pakistan have qualified for the semi-final of an ICC event, equaling Australia and India, who will also make their 14th semi-final appearance in the 2017 CT.
A worrying aspect for the Pakistan side will be their record in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy as they lost in all the three CT semi-finals they played previously: 2002, 2004 and 2009. In fact, the last time Pakistan won a semi-final in an ICC event was way back in World T20 2009 while in an ICC ODI tournament was way back in 1999 World Cup. This might not be a good fact for the Pakistan supporters and fans with their team already up against England, the most formidable side in limited-overs cricket at the moment.
Out of the 13 semi-finals, Pakistan have played in ICC tournaments, they have managed to win only 4 of those. However, they won all the 5 semi-finals they have played in multi-nation tournaments in the International cricket other than ICC organised events.
Overall, in the 18 semis, Pakistan have played in the Champions Trophy they have batted first 11 times and won 7. However, while chasing, they managed to win only 2 out of the 7. Against their semi-final opponent England, Pakistan have played only on semi-final in the past, in 1989 Nehru Cup where they ended on the winning side by a 6 wickets margin.
