The first Test between India and Bangladesh played in Chennai saw some incredible feats getting shattered. The star of the game was the legendary off spin wizard, Ravichandran Ashwin, who ran through the batting lineup of the visitors inside a session on Day 4. Notably before that, the home boy Ashwin played a magnanimous century knock to help India fightback despite suffering some early jolts. Though Ashwin remained thirsty for wickets in the first innings, he made up for it in the second innings on his home ground aka the iconic Chepauk.
Consequently, needing another 357 runs to win, Bangladesh batter found it way too tough against the magical deliveries of Ashwin. As a result, he became the wrecker-in-chief and claimed his 37th five-wicket haul to shatter some long-standing records. His 6/88 bowling figures meant that he equalized the record with none other the Australia legend, Shane Warne. Not just that, having scored a century and claiming a fifer led Ashwin to enter into an elite list of legends who have achieved a double of a fifer and a century in the same Test match.
Today’s sensational bowling spell meant that this was the fourth time the Indian spinner claimed this incredible feat. He is now only behind Sir Ian Botham, who did it for a record five occasions. Besides, the first man to achieve this feat was Jimmy Sinclair way back in the 19th century when he scored 106 and took 6/26 for South Africa against England.
Here is the list of Cricketers who have scored a century and taken a five-wicket haul in the same Test :
