South Africa’s batting mainstay Hashim Amla entered the record books when he notched up a classy century in his 100th Test. Amla has been one of the most prolific players for the Proteas outfit. This is evident from the numbers that back up his performances. Playing his 100th Test against Sri Lanka, Hashim Amla struck his 27th Test ton. At the end of day 1 he is batting unbeaten on 125 and could only add 12 runs to his overnight score before being dismissed.
The moment arrived when he lofted a shot over mid off to Rangana Herath. With the ton, Amla became only the 9th batsman in the history of the game to score a century in their 100th Test match. He became the second South African batsman to make it to the elite list where he joined former skipper Graeme Smith, who was the most recent player to achieve the feat before Amla.
Smith had hit 131 against England at the Oval back in 2012. The first batsman to score a century in the 100th Test match was Colin Cowdrey from England. The classy batsman had scored his ton against Australia at Birmingham in 1968. Cowdrey’s 114-match career had seen him score 22 Test centuries. Pakistan’s Javed Miandad was the second batsman to reach the milestone. He scored 145 against the arch rivals India at Lahore in December 1989. Arguably one of the best batsmen of yesteryears, West Indies batsman Gordon Greenidge had scored a powerful 149 against England in 1990. The

The only batsman to score two centuries or century in each innings of his 100th Test is former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting. The swashbuckling number three batsman had reached the unique distinction at Sydney while playing against South Africa in 2006. Ponting had scored 120 and 143* across the two innings of his 100th Test.
