Stats: Players who've scored most centuries for India in ODIs
Rohit smoked the 3rd double ton of his ODI career against Sri Lanka.
One would’ve thought the Indian team will be under tremendous pressure going into the second game after losing the first ODI where their batting unit collapsed like a house of cards. But that was not going to happen at the Chandigarh stadium.
Shikhar Dhawan started his innings with a boundary after Thisara Perera won the toss one more time and invited India to bat first. Dhawan looked in great touch and rhythm from the word go as he quickly completed his half-century but was holed out at the midwicket when he tried to deposit one over the boundary.
At the other end, Rohit Sharma who is captaining the side in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli was scoring his runs quietly. He took his time as Dhawan was pouncing at the other end. Sharma took 65 balls to reach his half-century but was in complete control. Playing just the second game of his ODI career Shreyas Iyer scored his maiden half-century during his partnership with skipper Sharma. As Iyer was going at good pace, It gave Sharma more time.
After reaching his ton, he changed gears and smoked sixes at will. After getting to his century, he scored the next 100 in just 36 balls. 12 Sixes during his innings. He now has 3 double centuries to his name. It was little master Sachin Tendulkar who scored the first-ever double ton and since then, Rohit has 3 to his name.
In the 40th over, when he took a single and completed his 16th ODI century off 115 balls he went past destructive opener Virender Sehwag’s career tally of 15 ODI century. Only 4 Indian batsmen have more ODI centuries than Rohit. The Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 49 ODI centuries to his name while India’s regular skipper Virat Kohli sits at the second spot with 32-hundreds to his name. Former skipper Saurav Ganguly with 22 tons to his name is at the 3rd spot.
