In the opening game of the Champions Trophy between England and Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal hit his 9th ODI century and became only the 2nd Bangladeshi player to hit a hundred in the ICC Champions Trophy after Shahriar Nafees, who scored an unbeaten 123* in 2006 against Zimbabwe.
Tamim Iqbal continued his great form in the ODI cricket as he struck his 5th fifty-plus score in his last 8 innings in the format which includes two hundreds. He shared a 166-run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim for the 3rd wicket and scored 128 during his stay off 142 balls and struck 3 sixes and 12 fours before getting out off Liam Plunkett’s bowling.
Tamim, who was making his maiden appearance in the ICC Champions Trophy, scored 128 in his debut game in the tournament to hand his side a 300+ total. Thus, he became only the 8th player to score a century on the CT debut game and his score of 128 is the 3rd highest among the 8 players.
Among the 8 players who have scored a century on CT debut, 7 players including Tamim scored while opening. The only other player is Mohammad Kaif who struck a century in his maiden CT game in 2002 vs Zimbabwe while batting at 7. In fact, seven of the 8 players who scored a CT debut ton have done while batting first. Zimbabwe’s Alistair Campbell scored 100 while chasing in 1998 vs New Zealand in the inaugural game of the Champions Trophy.
In case if Tamim follows his century with another one in the next game he plays in the CT, he will be the 4th player after Saeed Anwar, Upul Tharanga and Shikhar Dhawan to score centuries in their first two games in the CT.
