The defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are up against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 1st Qualifier of the ongoing 13th edition of the Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The toss went Shreyas Iyer’s way and he made the obvious choice to bowl. Batting first, the MI skipper Rohit Sharma bagged a golden duck to make an unpleasant record of getting out on a duck for the most number of times in the T20 Championship.
In the 13-year history of the tournament, Rohit has featured in 194 IPL innings and went back to the pavilion without scoring a single run for as many as 13 times. The opening batsman is having a lukewarm run in the IPL this season as in 11 games he managed to score just 264 runs at an average of 24 and strike rate of 126.31. He also has only two half-centuries to his name with 80 runs being his highest score.
6 batsmen have scored a duck for 12 times
However, Rohit Sharma is not the only player who has scored a duck 13 times in IPL. Veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has featured in 88 innings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Parthiv Patel, who played in 137 innings, are the joint-holders for this record with the Mumbai skipper with 13 ducks to their name.
While Harbhajan is not a part of IPL 2020 as he had pulled out his name from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp citing personal reasons, Parthiv Patel is yet to feature in the playing XI of RCB for even once this season.
The second spot in the charts of scoring most ducks in the IPL is acquired by 6 batsmen. The Super Kings spinner Piyush Chawla, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Manish Pandey and CSK’s Ambati Rayudu who came to bat on the crease for 81, 133 and 151 times respectively didn’t score a run for 12 times.
Kings XI Punjab batsman Mandeep Singh, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir and Delhi Capitals’ Ajinkya Rahane are also at the second spot with 12 ducks and have featured in 91, 152 and 138 IPL innings.
