Prithvi Shaw rose to the occasion of his Test debut as the new Indian opener had his Test career took off with an attacking fifty. Shaw, known for his attacking instincts, scored an unbeaten 75 in the opening session of the two-match series against the Windies. The 18-year-old brought up his fifty in just 56 balls and hit as many as 11 fours during his stay in the middle. He put on an unbeaten 130-run stand for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara after losing KL Rahul in the very first over.

The pair scored runs at a quick pace as India went into lunch at 133/1 after 25 overs with the run-rate reading 5.32. Prithvi, with his fifty, became the youngest Indian to score a Test fifty on debut. He is also the first to score a fifty on Test debut before turning 20. The previous youngest to score a half-century on debut for India was Abbas Ali Baig when he scored a 4th innings century against England in the 1959 Manchester Test match.

Prithvi Shaw is also the second youngest player to open the innings for India on Test debut. Vijay Mehra was 17 years and 265 days old when he made his debut as an Indian opener in 1955. Shaw is also the 4th youngest player ever to face the first ball of a Test match. With a single off Roston Chase in the 18th over, Prithvi brought up his fifty in 56 balls. It is the fourth fastest fifty by an Indian on his Test debut.

Yuvraj of Patiala scored a 42-ball fifty on his Test debut in 1934 Chennai Test against England. He scored a 50-ball 60 in the 4th innings of the Test match. On his debut last year, Hardik Pandya scored a 48-ball half-century against Sri Lanka before getting out. Shikhar Dhawan, whom Prithvi replaced in the playing XI, completed his fifty in 50 balls on his debut in 2013. Dhawan went on to score 187 on his Test debut against Australia which is the highest individual score by an Indian on debut.
