Rashid Khan added yet another feather in the cap as the leg-spinner from Afghanistan completed 100 wickets in the Twenty20 format. The 18-year-old, who made his debut in this format in October 2015, took less than two years for completing the milestone. Playing for the Band-e-Amir Dragons team in the Shpageeza Cricket League, Rashid picked up three wickets against Boost Defenders on Friday to become the youngest ever and the 2nd fastest player to reach the 100 wickets milestone in T20 format.
Rashid is leading the Band-e-Amir team in this domestic T20 competition and thus became the third youngest to lead a side in the Twenty20 format. Boost Defenders were 76/3 in 10 overs chasing a target of 155 runs when Rashid came out to bowl his first over. The Dragons’ skipper conceded 17 in his first two overs as the Defenders needed only 40 runs in the last five overs. In his 2nd spell, Rashid almost got the wicket of the set batsman Munir Ahmad.
However, the right hander had to retire hurt 32-ball 38 in Rashid’s 3rd over after being hit on the knee. He eventually got his first breakthrough with the wicket of Shapoor Zadran for a duck on the final ball of the over. He dismissed Rayad Emrit and John Campbell on successive deliveries of his final over to complete 100 T20 wickets. Dragons won the game by six runs with the help of their captain’s effort of 4-0-22-3.
Playing in his 66th T20 game, Rashid became the joint 2nd fastest to the milestone behind Krishmar Santokie, who needed just 54 matches and shares the 2nd spot with the Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis. No player before Rashid completed 100 T20 wickets before turning 23 as the Afghanistan star reached the milestone while he is four years younger. Danny Briggs of England achieved 100 wickets at the age of 23 years and 56 days while India’s Jasprit Bumrah got there a day older than Briggs.
