India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is having a dream of a Test match against Sri Lanka. In the ongoing first Test against the Lankan Lions in Mohali, Jadeja smashed an unbeaten 175 in the first innings to help India in registering a massive 574/8 on the board. He slammed 17 fours and three sixes on his way to a record-breaking score of over 150. He then backed up his batting performance with a solid spell of 5/41 to bundle out the visitors for just 174 runs.

He became the fourth different Indian cricketer to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test. Vinoo Mankad was the first one to achieve the special feat when he scored 184 and took 5/196 against England in 1952. Ten years later, Polly Umrigar scored 172* and registered figures of 5/107 against West Indies in 1962. R Ashwin has achieved the milestone thrice before Ravindra Jadeja finally scripted it.

Ashwin slammed 103 and took 5/156 in just the third Test of his career against the West Indies in Mumbai in the year 2011. The off-spinner again haunted the Caribbean team when he played an innings of 113 and bowled a brilliant spell of 7/83 in Antigua in 2016. Last year when England toured India in 2021, Ashwin slammed 106 runs and took 5/43 in the Chennai Test. Notably, Jadeja became the third Indian after Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar to score over 150 runs and pick a five-for in the same game.

Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 175 is the highest Test score for Indian at No. 7

With his knock of unbeaten 175 runs off 228 deliveries, Jadeja scripted the highest individual score by an Indian at No. 7 in Test cricket. He went past legendary Kapil Dev’s score of 163, which also came against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 1986.

The most recent inning with the best score at that position was played by wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant when he mustered 159* against Australia in Sydney in 2019. Notably, Jadeja also achieved the best score by Indians batting at No. 7 or lower in the Tests.

The left-handed batter Jadeja also became the second player for India after Kapil Dev to score 5000 runs and pick 400 scalps across formats. Kapil Dev scored 9031 runs and snared 687 wickets while Jadeja has amassed 5107 runs and taken 474 wickets in international cricket.

Overall, he is the 14th player to achieve the landmark across formats. The 33-years old is also having the best batting average for India in international cricket since 2020, having played a minimum of 30 innings which is 50.66. Shreyas Iyer is on second for his 42.76 average.
