Stats: Ravindra Jadeja scores his maiden century in Test cricket

Ravindra Jadeja finally brought an end to his wait for a Test century as he scored an unbeaten century in the first Test match against the Windies. Batting at No.7, the all-rounder remained unbeaten on 100 that came off 132 deliveries. He struck five maximums and five fours on his way through a special inning. Jadeja’s wait for a century came to an end at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot, his home venue. His late attack helped India post 649/9 before declaring their innings.

Coming into this encounter, Jadeja featured in 37 Test matches without a three-figure score. He batted in 55 innings scoring nine fifties before this hundred. He came close to a ton during the 2016/17 home Test against England where he got out on 90 in the Mohali Test match. In his first game during the England tour this year, Jadeja scored an unbeaten 86 before running out of partners. In his very next Test appearance, the left-hander raised bat twice in a Test innings for the first time.

Jadeja batted in 55 innings before his maiden Test century which is the third most by any player. Anil Kumble ended his wait for a Test century in 2007 The Oval Test against England only after batting 150 times. The former leg-spinner holds the world record for most innings before maiden Test ton. Harbhajan Singh stands second in the Indian list having scored his maiden century in his 122nd innings. Harbhajan ended up scoring his second Test century in the next outing.

Only three players in the history of Test cricket batted 100 and more innings before their maiden Test ton including Kumble and Harbhajan. Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas scored his first Test ton in his 141st innings. Manoj Prabhakar and Syed Kirmani are the other two Indian players to play 50 or more innings before scoring their first Test century. Prabhakar scored his maiden Test ton in his 53rd innings while Kirmani did it in his 51st innings.
