Rishabh Pant’s work behind the stumps surely made a difference in the first match of the four-Test series against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. The young wicketkeeper claimed as many as 11 catches including six in the first innings. Pant began his Test career with five catches in his maiden innings as a keeper. However, he has been under the scanner since then having conceded quite a few byes. Pant’s footwork behind the stumps might be flawed but the 21-year-old is good enough at grabbing the chances that come towards him.

With the 11 catches in the Adelaide Test, Pant now holds the record for most number of dismissals as a keeper in a Test match for India. In this process, he went past Wriddhiman Saha’s ten catches in the Cape Town Test at the start of the year against South Africa. He also equalled the world record for most number of dismissals in a Test which is helped by Jack Russell of England and AB de Villiers for South Africa.

In the first innings, Rishabh Pant levelled the Indian record for most dismissals as keeper in a Test innings with six catches and with the five catches in second, he nearly broke the World record. Pant, in fact, had a chance to go past Russell and De Villiers’ record when Nathon Lyon edged one but the Indian keeper couldn’t hold the ball as he was on wrong-side when the ball came towards him. Had Pant took the catch, he would have been the first wicketkeeper to dismiss ten different players.

Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten in both innings while Pat Cummins was dismissed LBW in the first innings and caught in slips in the second essay. Remaining nine Australian batsmen were out caught by Pant at least once in this game. Thus, he became only the 3rd wicketkeeper to dismissed nine different batsmen in a Test match. Adam Gilchrist in the 2000 Hamilton Test against New Zealand and Brad Haddin in the 2014 Brisbane Test match against India took catches of nine different opposition players.
