Rohit Sharma was rested from the Mumbai Indians’ home fixture against the Kings XI Punjab due to the injury he suffered on eve of the game. Rohit pulled a hamstring muscle during the practice session on Tuesday where he was seen limping. However, the MI team confirmed that he was fully fit but did not want to take a risk by playing him in this game. The Mumbai team are scheduled to play three more games in the next 8 days.
His absence in this game brought an end to his 133-match streak in the IPL for the Mumbai Indians. Since his debut for MI in 2011, Mumbai team never fielded without Rohit Sharma in the IPL. This is the 2nd longest streak by any player for a single team in the IPL. Suresh Raina featured in 134 consecutive IPL matches played by Chennai Super Kings until he missed a game during the previous edition.
Most consecutive appearances for a team in the IPL:
In fact, this is only the 2nd time Rohit Sharma didn’t feature in a game for his team in the IPL. He was rested by the Deccan Chargers for their last league game during the 2008 edition. The Hyderabad franchise were going to finish at bottom of the table irrespective of the result of their last game against CSK. By missing the game against Kings XI, Rohit allowed Dinesh Karthik to lead the list of players who missed the fewest number of matches in the IPL.
Karthik missed only one game that too in the inaugural season like Rohit while playing for Delhi Daredevils. Rohit is now tied with Raina who also missed two matches; once in 2016 while leading Gujarat Lions and one in the previous season for CSK. Among the players who have played all the editions of the IPL, only three others have missed as few as three matches of their teams.

Missing this game also brought an end to Rohit’s 66-match streak of leading the Mumbai Indians in the Twenty20 format. This is the 5th longest streak for any player as captain of a team in this format. Rohit’s streak began from the 2015 IPL after he missed the CLT20 held in 2014 due to an injury. Gautam Gambhir has the longest streak as he led Kolkata Knight Riders in 107 consecutive Twenty20s starting from 2011 CLT20 and up to the 2017 IPL.
