Stats: Shimron Hetmyer scores his 3rd century in ODI cricket

Shimron Hetmyer caught everyone’s eye with his sensational hitting during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) that concluded in September. The 2016 Under-19 World Cup winning skipper has improved his game gradually to succeed at this level. Hetmyer, who will turn 22 on Boxing Day, has already made himself one of the vital cogs in the current Windies line-up. The left-hander has been a consistent show ever since his ODI debut in December 2017 batting in the middle-order.

Hetmyer had a low key start to the long tour in India as he was dismissed between 10 and 20 on all four occasions in the two-match Test series against the hosts. However, he bounced back strongly in the ODI series with a sparkling century in the first game in Guwahati. Hetmyer walked in to bat at 86/3 after a couple of quick wickets. He raced to a 41-ball fifty and brought up his century in only 74 deliveries. His innings finally came to an end when he missed time one off Ravindra Jadeja after hitting six fours and six maximums during his 78-ball 106.

The 21-year-old thus became the first Windies player to hit as many as three centuries in ODI cricket before turning 22. A total of ten players before Hetmyer have scored three and more ODI tons before turning 21 but none of them was from the Windies. Shimron scored his 3rd century in his 13th ODI innings also the fewest by any player from Windies. The previous quickest to score three ODI centuries for the Caribbean team was Viv Richards in 16 innings.

Overall, Hetmyer is the 5th quickest to score three ODI centuries. The record was recently set by Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq in eight innings. England’s Dennis Amiss, who hit the first ever ODI century, scored his third ODI ton in his 9th innings. Amiss jointly held the record for being quickest to three ODI tons with another England player Kevin Pietersen until Imam surpassed both.
