Stats: Shubman Gill scores an unbeaten century in the Deodhar Trophy
Shubman struck eight fours and three sixes during his innings against India B that fetched him the player of the match.
Shubman Gill managed to convert his success from the Under-19 level at the senior level as the youngster has been amongst runs in the domestic tournaments thus far. Gill finished his Youth ODI career with over 1000 runs at an average of 104.46. The 19-year-old has scored four centuries and seven fifties in his 33-match List A career to date, scoring 1441 runs at 49.68. His unbeaten 111-ball 106 in the Deodhar Trophy game on Thursday helped India C qualify for the final.
Gill walked out to bat at 24/1 in eighth over when his team lost the wicket of skipper Ajinkya Rahane in the 294-run chase. They were reduced to 85/3 with the experienced Abhinav Mukund and Suresh Raina back in the hut. However, Gill added 121 for the 4th wicket along wicket Ishan Kishan in only 104 deliveries to bring down the required rate. He stayed unbeaten to finish off the chase with Surya Kumar Yadav via an unbeaten 90-run 5th wicket stand.
The dynamic batter struck eight fours and three sixes during his innings against India B that fetched him the player of the match. With this century, Gill became the 5th youngest player to score a century in the Deodhar Trophy history. The record is held by Suresh Raina who scored 129 while playing for Central Zone in the 2004/05 edition of the tournament. The left-handed batsman was only 18 years and 66 days old.
Raina bagged this record going past another southpaw Sourav Ganguly who was the first teenager to score a century in the Deodhar Trophy. The former Indian captain was 18 years and 186 days old when he scored a ton in the Deodhar final in 1990/91. The current Indian opener Rohit Sharma was 18 years and 307 days old when he scored an unbeaten 142 for West Zone in 2006.
Prior to this knock, Rohit’s highest List A score was only 31 runs. Interestingly, the Mumbaikar came in as a replacement via super-sub rule. Baba Apparajith bettered Rohit when he scored 121 for South Zone in 2013 at the age of 18 years and 245 days. All the four players younger than Gill to score a Deodhar Trophy ton recorded that as their maiden century in List A cricket.
