Stats: Most sixes by captains in Test cricket

Pakistan Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq isn’t someone with a reputation of being a big hitter of the cricket ball. He likes to give his inning time, get his eyes in and then paces the knock. Misbah who is also the holder of the joint fastest Test century record today overhauled another record in the whites. In his knock of 90* on the first day of the second Test against West Indies at Abu Dhabi, he has hit a couple of sixes and that took him ahead of former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum in the list of captains with most sixes in Test cricket.

He has played 66 Tests, is leading the team in the 48 games against West Indies that started today. McCullum with 59 sixes had just before his retirement taken over the first spot from former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who retired from Tests in the last part of 2014. Dhoni holds the number 3 spot with 51 from 60 matches where he captained the team.

There are five West Indians in the along with one Australian and another former Pakistan skipper. Following the top three is West Indies great Brian Lara. The left-hander was an attacking cricketer and loved to play his shots. He seldom curbed his instinct of taking on the bowlers. Lara hit 49 sixes while leading the Windies team in Tests.

Two legends Clive Lloyd and Vivian Richards occupy the fifth and sixth position in the top 10 skippers with most Test sixes list. Lloyd was the captain for 74 Test matches and parked the ball over the ropes on 48 occasions while the big man Viv Richards has 46 sixes to his name having captained the side in 50 matches in the longest format.

Next up is the most successful Test skipper ever Australia’s Ricky Ponting. There has been no cricketer who mastered the pull shot as well as Ponting did and was probably the one stroke that got him most of the 37 maximums he scored in his 6 years captaincy career. The big hitter from West Indies Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy along with Pakistan’s World Cup winning skipper Imran Khan complete the list with 34, 32 and 30 sixes respectively.
