Sophie Devine has been in brilliant touch with the bat before the Women’s T20 World Cup as the all-rounder amassed over 1100 runs across WBBL and Women’s Super Smash tournaments. The newly appointed White Ferns captain put on record-breaking performances during the T20I series against South Africa Women.
After losing the ODI series 0-3, Devine amassed 297 runs with three fifties and a century in the 5-match series. The last game of the series was abandoned without a toss denying the New Zealand skipper from bagging few more records.
All the stats and records created by Sophie Devine in the series against South Africa Women:
1 – Sophie Devine became the first player in the history of T20I format across Men’s and Women’s cricket with fifty-plus scores in five consecutive innings. The previous most was four in a row by Mithali Raj (2016-2018) in Women’s cricket and also the same by Brendon McCullum (2008-2009) and Chris Gayle (in 2012) in Men’s T20I cricket. Devine has 50+ runs in seven of her last eight T20I innings which is also a World record.
2 – Sophie also became the first captain in Women’s cricket with four consecutive fifty-plus scores in the T20I format – 105, 77, 61, 54*. Only Aaron Finch has recorded four consecutive 50+ scores in Men’s T20Is while leading the team.
4 – Sophie Devine became the first player in Women’s cricket to smash four fifty-plus scores in a T20I series/tournament. She is also the first player with four scores of 50+ runs in a bilateral T20I series (Men/Women). Matthew Hayden and Virat Kohli had four 50+ scores in 2007 and 2014 editions of WT20 respectively.
6 – Devine scored at least 50 runs in each of her last six T20I innings against South Africa Women – 105, 77, 61, 54*, 68* and 73. No player before Devine has recorded more than four consecutive 50+ T20I scores against an opponent across both Men’s and Women’s cricket.
7 – Devine became only 2nd player to record as many as seven 50+ scores against an opponent in T20I cricket (Men/Women). Stafanie Taylor has seven 50+ scores across 20 innings against Sri Lanka Women. Virat Kohli’s six fifties against Australia are the most 50+ scores by a player against an opponent in Men’s T20Is.
16 – Number of sixes Sophie smashed during the series against South Africa; the most by any Woman in a T20I series/tournament. She went past Harmanpreet Kaur’s tally of 13 sixes during the 2018 Women’s WT20.
105 – Sophie Devine became the first player to score a century in Women’s T20I cricket on New Zealand soil with the 105-run knock in the 4th match of the series. She is also only the 2nd player to score a century in the T20I format for New Zealand Women. Suzie Bates was the other player with a T20I ton for the White Ferns as she scored 124* in the 2018 Taunton T20I also against South Africa Women.
297 – Devine’s 297 runs in this series against South Africa are the most by a player in any Women’s T20I series/tournament. She went past the 257 runs aggregated by Meg Lanning in the 2014 WT20. Four players scored more than 297 runs in a Men’s T20I series/tournament but only Aaron Finch (306 in Zimbabwe T20I Tri-series, 2018) scored more than Devine while leading the team.
