The senior duo of Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan has put Bangladesh on the top in all the three matches of the ongoing ODI series against the Windies. Their performances with the bat in the Test series were heavily criticized as the team were bowled out for less than 200 in all the four innings. The left-handed pair began the ODI series with a brilliant double century stand as they also ensured a longer stay at the crease.
Their stand helped Bangladesh register their first win on the tour and followed it with a 97-run stand during the run-chase in the 2nd ODI which they lost by a mere 3-run margin. Once again, Tamim and Shakib were to Bangladesh’s rescue after they lost their first wicket in the 10th over. Shakib scored a 44-ball 37 before getting out to Ashely Nurse trying to increase the rate. The pair added 81 runs in 16 overs for the 2nd wicket to extend their tally of runs in the series to 385.
The total of 385 runs between Tamim and Shakib in this series are the most by a Bangladesh pair in an ODI series/tournament. The opening pair of Mehrab Hossain jnr and Shahriar Nafees put on 369 runs in the 5-match home series against Zimbabwe in 2006. The pair had four 50+ stands in five innings between them in the series including a 104-run partnership. No other pair from Bangladesh has put on more than 320 runs in an ODI series/tournament.
The series total of 385 runs between this Bangladesh pair is now also the highest in any 3-match bilateral ODI series. The pair broke the record set by Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock during the 3-match ODI series against them last year. The South African opening pair shared 372 runs in only two innings as a pair in the series where their stands read 282* and 90. The same pair had 368 runs across the home ODI series against India in 2013 which is the 3rd most in a 3-match ODI series by any pair.
