Team India made it to the semi-finals of the 5th consecutive ICC event since 2013 as they defeated South Africa in a must-win game by a margin of 8 wickets in the 2017 Champions Trophy. This will be the 5th time India will play a semi-final of the Champions Trophy; the joint-most number of times along with the South Africans. Overall, this is the 14th time India have made it to the semi-finals of an ICC tournament. Australia also have made into semis of 14 ICC events.

India does have a pretty good record while playing in the semis as they won 3 of the previous 4 semi-finals in the CT; the only one they lost was in 1998, the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy. In the 13 semi-finals they played in ICC events so far, India went through to the final 8 times and had to return home in 5 tournaments.

Two of the last 5 semi-final losses for India in the ICC events came in the previous two ICC events; the 2015 World Cup and 2016 World T20. Between 2000 and 2014, India played in 7 ICC tournament semis and won all those matches. Other than the ICC events, India has played 6 semi-finals in International cricket (all in ODI format) which were in multi-nation tournaments.

In the 19 semis India has played in the International cricket, they lost 7 and won 12 for making it to the finals. India won both the semi-finals they played in England before this tournament; the 1983 World and the 2013 Champions Trophy. They won all the 6 semi-finals they played outside Asia before losing at Sydney to Australia in the 2015 World Cup. While chasing, Team India has won 6 out of 9 semis while defending the target, they have won 6 out of 10.
