Stats: Top 10 lowest totals in Test cricket
Windies skittled Bangladesh out for 43 runs on the first day of the first Test match in Antigua.
Bangladesh got off to the worst possible start to their Windies tour as they registered their lowest total in the Test cricket ever. The first Test of the two-match series got underway on Wednesday in which the visitors were invited to bat first by Jason Holder after winning the toss. But every few must have expected them to fold for 43 in only 18.4 overs to record the 10th lowest total in the history of the longest format of the game.
Kemar Roach was the wrecker-in-chief for Bangladesh as he ran through their top-order to return with the unthinkable figures of 5/8. They never recovered from the early blows and were folded before lunch with only Liton Das managing to cross the double figures.
Thankfully for the Asian Tigers, they escaped the humiliation of registering the lowest total in whites ever after being reduced to 18/5. But they became the first team to get skittled out for the lowest score in Tests since 1974. India were bowled out for 42 runs in 17 overs back then by England.
Who holds the record?
New Zealand holds the unwanted record of lowest total in a Test inning ever. They were bundled out for a meagre 26 runs in the third innings of a Test match against England in Auckland way back in 1955. 63 years down the line, no team has managed to bundle out any opposition under 26 despite the fact that the teams like Australia (21/9) and England (23/8).
South Africa dominates this list as they have been dismissed by their opponents under the score of 40 almost 4 times and once for the score of 43. But most of their low scores have come in the 19th century when they were not a force to reckon with. In this list, England appears more in terms of the opposition who have bowled the teams out for low totals.
Even India and Australia have made their presence felt as they were given a hiding by England in 1974 and 1888 respectively. Bangladesh have equalled New Zealand’s total of 42 to register the joint 10th lowest total in Tests and are also the newest entrants in the list.
