Stats: Top 5 highest match totals in IPL history
A total of 449 runs were scored in the RR vs KXIP game on Sunday.
The match 9 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) created records. The Royals, led by Steve Smith, chased down the highest IPL total ever. The franchise broke its own record set in 2008 when RR had chased down in 2016 against the Deccan Chargers, the season when they had won the title as well.
Rahul Tewatia, Sanju Samson and Smith were the heroes of their chase on the day as a massive 449 runs were scored in 40 overs. KXIP, on the back of a scintillating 106 from Mayank Agarwal, posted 223 runs for the loss of two wickets and then the Royals pulled off a heist to smash 226 runs in 19.3 overs. The match aggregate of 449 runs in this match turned out to be the fourth-most ever in the history of the cash-rich league.
The match that tops the charts in this aspect also involves the Royals. In the 2010 season against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), RR were chasing 247 runs and had reached 223 runs in response to lose the game by only 23 runs. A total of 469 runs were scored in the game and 10 years down the line, it is the highest match-aggregate ever in the IPL history.
KXIP involved in all other four matches in the list
Interestingly, KXIP team is involved in four of the top five highest match-aggregates in the IPL history ever. The second on this list is the game between them and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2018 season. Chasing a target of 246 runs, the Kings XI had reached 214 only to fall 31 runs short. KL Rahul had scored 66 off 29 deliveries then in the chase and had ended up on the losing side, like he did on Sunday(batting first).
The third highest-match totals in IPL ever witnessed KXIP locking horns against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Indore in IPL 2017. On the back of Wriddhiman Saha’s 55-ball 93*, they had posted 230 runs and MI could reach only 223 in response with a total of 453 runs being scored in the game.
However, among the top five match aggregates in IPL, the game between RR and KXIP witnessed least number of wickets falling while in the other games, bowlers managed to scalp at least nine wickets.
