Stats: Vinay Kumar's hat-trick against Mumbai in numbers

Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar cut down the hype around the much-talked quarter-final between his side and Mumbai in a matter of minutes as the pacer bagged four wickets including a hat-trick after electing to bowl first. Vinay dismissed Mumbai’s star of the season Prithvi Shaw on the final ball of game’s first over and Jay Bista on the first ball of his 2nd over. On the following delivery, he trapped Akash Parkar in front to complete the hat-trick.

2 – Number of hat-tricks for Vinay Kumar in Ranji Trophy so far. He picked a hat-trick against Maharashtra in the 2007/08 season. Vinay Kumar became the 4th player with multiple hat-tricks in Ranji Trophy after Joginder Rao (3 hat-tricks for Services), Pritam Gandhe (Vidarbha) and Anil Kumble (Karnataka).

2.2 – Vinay Kumar bagged a hat-trick by 2.2 overs of this game. This is the earliest instance of a hat-trick in a Ranji Trophy match. Haryana’s Dhruv Singh took a hat-trick by 18.4 overs against Uttar Pradesh in 2010/11 season.

Since there is no exact information regarding the overs in earlier days, by assumption, the other earliest instance could be Uttar Pradesh’s Subhash Jhanji who bagged a hat-trick against Vidarbha in 1963/64 just before or after the 17th over. In the same season, Joginder Rao of Services took a hat-trick against Jammu & Kashmir in an innings that lasted 31.1 overs with Rao recording his hat-trick with the 4th wicket to fall.

3 – Vinay’s hat-trick was the 3rd for any player against Mumbai. Interestingly, all the three came in knockout games only. The previous one against them was by Raghuram Bhat of Karnataka in 1981/82 semis.

6 – Vinay Kumar became the 6th bowler to take a hat-trick in a Ranji Trophy knockout game. The last one was Sagarmoy Sensharma in the 1993/94 Pre-Quarter Final for Bengal against Delhi.
