The 2nd T20I against New Zealand in Rajkot was a game of milestones for Virat Kohli despite the fact that Team India lost the game by a huge margin as the visitors dragged the series into the decider at Thiruvananthapuram. On the eve of his 29th birthday, he set a few individual records in T20Is and T20 formats during the game which was dominated by Colin Munro who scored an unbeaten hundred.

Kohli, who walked out to bat after Shikhar Dhawan was bowled, hit the 3rd ball he faced for a boundary. It was the 200th four he has hit in the T20I format and thus became the 3rd player after Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mohammad Shahzad to do that. He struck seven more fours during his 65-run knock to increase his fours tally to 207, only behind Dilshan’s 223. Kohli needed exactly 50 innings for his 200th four while Shahzad got there in 58 and Dilshan took 73 innings.

The Indian skipper’s wait to complete 200 fours was extended by three matches after the rain-affected Ranchi T20I as he got out for a duck in Guwahati while the Hyderabad T20I was abandoned due to wet outfield. During the 1st T20I in Delhi, Kohli hit three sixes in his knock but no fours.

Most fours by a player in T20I cricket:

When he reached the individual score of 12 runs, the 29-year-old became the 2nd highest run-getter in the T20I format surpassing Dilshan. The Delhi batsman now has 1943 runs standing only behind Brendon McCullum’s 2140. Earlier in the first innings, Martin Guptill moved up to 4th place in the leading run-getters list of this format with 1855 runs. His 45-run knock helped him to move past Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik.

Before that, Kohli reached another milestone as he completed 7000 runs in Twenty20 cricket when he was on ten. Thus, he became the 1st Indian player and the 8th overall to complete 7000 Twenty20 runs. He also became the 2nd fastest to the milestone taking 212 innings, behind Chris Gayle (192).
