West Indies is one of the many opponents against whom Virat Kohli has consistently scored runs in the ODI format. His record against the Caribbean side is growing every passing day. During the Port of Spain ODI on Sunday, the Indian skipper scored his 42nd ODI hundred. It was Kohli’s 8th hundred against the Windies and the 5th ton that was scored in the previous eight innings against them. Kohli scored 120 from 125 deliveries as India won the game by 59 runs via DLS method.
When Kohli went past his individual score of 88, he became the first player in the ODI format to amass 2000 runs against the Windies. Javed Miandad, with 1930 runs, was the leading run-getter in ODIs against them until Kohli. The interesting part of Kohli’s numbers here is that he scored those in 34 innings against the Windies while Miandad took 64 innings; thirty more than the Indian captain.
By completing 2000 ODI runs against the Windies in only 34 innings, Virat Kohli became the fastest player to reach 2000 runs against any opponent in the ODI format. In this process, Kohli broke the record set by his deputy Rohit Sharma during the World Cup. Rohit completed 2000 ODI runs against the Aussies in 37 knocks only. The current Indian opener then broke the record held by Sachin Tendulkar who needed 40 innings for 2000 ODI runs also against Australia.
As of today, Kohli has scored 2032 runs against the Caribbean side with the help of eight centuries and ten fifties. No player other than Kohli has struck more than five tons against the Windies in their ODI career. He currently averages 72.57 with the bat against them; the best average for any player against an opponent in ODIs with a minimum of 2000 runs. Out of those eight hundreds, Kohli scored two in the Windies; which are the most by an Indian in ODIs in the Caribbean Islands.
