Statisticians have busy times these days whenever India play and captain Virat Kohli bats. The man who became the quickest to enter the 10,000-runs club in the second ODI against the Windies in Vishakhapatnam on October 24, slammed yet another record on Saturday in the third ODI in Pune. Kohli scored his third consecutive hundred in the series which again gave him an entry in another special club.
Kohli, who is just days short of turning 30, became only the 10th batsman in the history of ODI cricket to belt three consecutive hundreds. He, however, is the first Indian and fifth Asian to accomplish the feat. Kohli now has 38 ODI hundreds from 214 matches, just 11 short of the table topper Sachin Tendulkar, who he eclipsed as the quickest to make the elite 10,000 runs club.
Kohli hit 140 in the first ODI against the Windies in Guwahati which India won by 8 wickets. He then slammed 157 not out in the second ODI which ended in a tie. His third hundred in the series, however, failed to give India a win as the other batsmen could not get their act together while chasing a target of 284. Overall, the third hundred was Kohli’s 62nd in international cricket.
Sangakkara tops the list with four consecutive hundreds
The most number of consecutive ODI hundreds has been hit by former Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara who scored four on the trot in 2015. All the other nine batsmen in the list have hit three consecutive hundreds in the ODIs and they include Zaheer Abbas of Pakistan (span 1982-83); his compatriot Saeed Anwar (1993); South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs (2002); his compatriots AB de Villiers (2010) and Quinton de Kock (2013); New Zealand’s Ross Taylor (2014); Pakistan’s Babar Azam (2016) and England’s Jonny Bairstow, who also achieved the feat this year.
Kohli, during his century on Saturday, also overtook team-mate Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the list of highest run-scorers. Both the batsmen have over 10,000 runs but Kohli’s tireless show with the bat now has taken him ahead of his predecessor and places him at the fourth highest scorer for India in the 50-overs format, behind Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
