While the Royal Challengers Bangalore have been on a roll in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Virat Kohli is enduring a hard time this season. The 33-year-old has looked nowhere near his best so far and has earned massive criticism from different corners. In fact, former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar also reckons that Kohli should be dropped from the lineup if he’s not able to deliver significantly.
It must be noted that Kohli relinquished RCB captaincy following the conclusion of the last season and is playing as a pure batter in the ongoing competition. The right-handed batter was expected to play freely with the leadership responsibilities not being on his back anymore. However, that hasn’t been the case at all. RCB have already played seven of their 14 group-stage games and Kohli is yet to score a half-century.
Virat Kohli’s enduring a horrible campaign!
He got into the 40s on a couple of occasions but couldn’t convert his start into a significant score. In fact, Kohli’s tally of 119 runs so far is his least after seven games in an IPL season. The right-handed batter scored 122 and 123 runs in the first two seasons respectively. However, he was batting lower down the order at the time and wasn’t getting substantial time to bat.
Virat Kohli’s runs every IPL season after first seven games
Year | Runs |
2008 | 122 |
2009 | 123 |
2010 | 131 |
2011 | 294 |
2012 | 129 |
2013 | 322 |
2014 | 140 |
2015 | 221 |
2016 | 433 |
2017 | 239 |
2018 | 317 |
2019 | 270 |
2020 | 256 |
2021 | 198 |
2022 | 119 |
These numbers reflect Kohli’s form has hit an all-time low and the right-handed batter must make a comeback soon. Meanwhile, his performance hasn’t really come under the scanner so far as RCB have overall done well in the competition. Led by Faf du Plessis, the Bengaluru-based side has won five of their first seven games and must make it to the playoffs pretty comfortably.
However, Kohli’s form would be a concern for the team as the tournament enters its latter stages. While the RCB team management is expected to back their former skipper, many reckon time is running out for Kohli.
