Sri Lanka’s Wanidu Hasaranga had a dream debut on Sunday against Zimbabwe in the 2nd ODI of the series as he took a hat-trick in the first innings. The 19-year-old was making his International debut and took 3 wickets in 3 balls in his 3rd over to wrap up the Zimbabwe innings for just 155. To make his achievement even more special, the right-hander from Galle was playing his maiden game for Sri Lanka at his home ground.
Wanidu conceded 11 runs in his first two overs and was hit for a boundary by Malcolm Waller on the first ball of his 3rd over. Waller tried to hit one more on a leg break delivery from the debutant but got an inside edge which deflected on to leg stump and the bails were off. Hasaranga followed it with a googly to trap Donald Tiripano in front on the very next ball.
He completed his hat-trick with yet another googly which went through the bat and pad of Tendai Chatara to clean up the stumps. Thus the young leg-spinner became the first spinner and the 5th bowler overall to take an ODI hat-trick for Sri Lanka.

With this hat-trick, Wanidu became only the 3rd player after Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada to take a hat-trick on ODI debut. Taijul took a hat-trick on his debut in 2014 vs Zimbabwe while Rabada bagged it against Bangladesh in 2015. Both were recorded at the Mirpur Stadium in Dhaka.
So far only three players including Wanidu Hasaranga have taken a hat-trick on their International debut. England’s Maurice Allom in 1930 against New Zealand at Christchurch and New Zealand’s Peter Petherick in 1976 against Pakistan at Lahore have taken a hat-trick on their Test debut which was also their debut in International cricket.
The 19-year-old Sri Lankan now has become the 3rd youngest to take a hat-trick in ODI cricket. Pakistan’s Aaqib Javed and Saqlain Mushtaq have taken hat-tricks in ODIs while they were younger than Wanidu.
