Yashasvi Jaiswal’s tour of South Africa began with one of the finest all-round performances ever as India Under-19s completed a series win against the home team. Jaiswal first stepped up with his leg-spin picking 4/13 in 3.5 overs; all being bowled wickets. The South Africa Under-19s were bowled out for just 119 as three other bowlers picked two wickets each. India U19s lost a couple of early wickets but Yashasvi’s unbeaten 56-ball 89 helped the visitors chase down 120 in only 16.2 overs.

The opening batsman struck 14 fours and three sixes during his match-winning knock. The fascinating fact here is Yashasvi was celebrating his 18th birthday on Saturday. He was rested for the first game of the 3-match Youth ODI series which India U19s won by 9 wickets. The last match will be played on Monday before India Under-19s will be part of a Quadrangular series.

All the stats and records Yashasvi Jaiswal created with his all-round effort against South Africa:

1 – Yashasvi Jaiswal became the first Indian opener and overall only the 4th opening batsman to score 50+ runs and take a 4-wicket haul in the same Youth ODI. West Indies‘ Gidron Pope (76 & 4/24) against Fiji in the 2016 U19 CWC, Australia’s Jack Edwards (73 & 4/65) against India and Zimbabwe’s Wesley Madhevere (93 & 4/24) in the 2018 U19 CWC were the other three openers with this double.

3 – Jaiswal is also only the 3rd Indian with 50+ runs and 4+ wickets in the same Youth ODI. Hrishikesh Kanitkar (52 & 4/36) against Australia in the 1994 Ahmedabad Youth ODI and Yuvraj Singh (68 & 4/36) against New Zealand in the 2000 U19 CWC achieved this double.

3 – Yashasvi is only the 3rd player to take a 4-wicket haul on a birthday in Youth ODI cricket but his figures of 4/13 are the best among the three. England’s Robert Ferley took 4/32 on his 19th birthday against India in the 2001 Vijayawada ODI while Australia’s Iain Carlisle had figures of 4/60 against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

4/13 – Jaiswal’s bowling figures of 4/13 are the 2nd best for India in a Youth ODI on South African soil. The current USA skipper Saurabh Netravalkar had bowling figures of 5/26 while playing for India U19s in the 2010 Johannesburg Youth ODI against Sri Lanka.

This is also the first 4-wicket haul by an Indian spinner in a Youth ODI hosted by Africa. Overall, only three Indian spinners had better bowling figures than his 4/13 in Youth ODI cricket outside Asia.

4 – Yashasvi became only the 2nd Indian to claim four wickets in a Youth ODI via bowled. During the Sri Lanka U19 Tri-series in 2015, Mahipal Lomror recorded a 4-fer against England with four bowled wickets.

89* – Yashasvi’s unbeaten 89 is the highest individual score on birthday in Youth ODI cricket. The previous highest was 89 by Marshall Ayub for Bangladesh in the 2007 Karachi Youth ODI against Pakistan.

158.92 – The 18-year-old had a batting strike rate of 158.92 during his unbeaten 56-ball 89; the 3rd highest in a Youth ODI innings of 50+ balls for India. Shreyas Iyer scored a 67-ball 109 at 162.68 SR against Australia in 2013 Vizag Youth ODI while Yuvraj Singh had a strike rate of 161.81 during his 89 off 55 balls against Sri Lanka in 1999 Delhi Youth ODI.
