Prithvi Shaw, the 17-year-old Mumbai batsman announced his arrival with a century in the 4th innings of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 semi-final against Tamil Nadu at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Thus he became the 2nd youngest Indian and the 10th youngest overall to score a 4th innings century in first-class cricket.

Prithvi, who made into the limelight with a record-breaking knock of 546 in Harris Shield game in 2013 featured in India’s victorious came in the recent Under-19 Asia Cup. Following his exploits, he was picked up by Mumbai team for their semi-final game. Prithvi got out for just 4 runs in the first innings but utilized the 2nd chance by smashing 120 off 175 balls before getting out 10 runs short of the target.

He started the game at the age of 17 years and 53 days and became the youngest to score a century in 4th innings on first-class debut. Among Indians, only Sachin Tendulkar at 16 years 193 days old managed to score a century in 4th innings in a FC game. Sachin did it in Irani Cup in 1989/90 season for Rest of India against Delhi by scoring an unbeaten 103.

Prithvi Shaw, in fact, became the youngest to score a century in a Ranji Trophy knockout game breaking Brijesh Patel’s record, who scored an unbeaten 105 in the 2nd innings for Mysore against Bombay in 1969/70 semi-final starting the game at an age of 17 years and 116 days.

With his ton, Prithvi became the 13th player to score a century on his first appearance in first-class for Mumbai. At the age of 17 years and 53 days, he became the 8th youngest Indian to score a century on his first-class debut.
