English actor and comedian Stephen Fry has been confirmed as the next Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) President after being nominated by the current President, Clare Connor recently. Fry is expected to take over the position from October 1 and the club’s general meeting had approved the decision on May 4 (Wednesday).

It has to be noted that Fry is a multi-talented person and has been a screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, television presenter, and film director apart from being a comedian and an actor. His love for the game was expressed last year when he became only the second non-cricketing personality to give the 20th MCC Cowdrey Lecture in November 2021. The 64-year-old is a member of MCC since 2011 and he noted his excitement over being confirmed for the role.

To be gifted the opportunity to perform this role is truly humbling: Stephen Fry

Fry expressed how much he is delighted and proud over becoming the next President of MCC and mentioned the importance of getting an opportunity for one of the most prestigious positions. He paid gratitude to Clare for nominating him and noted that he is looking forward to the responsibilities ahead.

“I am honoured and proud to be nominated as the next President of MCC. It is a club that is known throughout the world for what it represents in the game and to be gifted the opportunity to perform this role is truly humbling. I thank Clare for this incredible opportunity and I look forward to supporting her as President-Designate over the summer before commencing my own innings in the autumn,” Fry said in a statement as quoted by News18.

Meanwhile, former England women’s cricketer Clare was quite happy with Stephen taking up the role and she noted the latter’s love for cricket. She added about the lecture that Stephen gave in 2021 and felt that his experience will come in handy while taking up the role.

“I am thrilled to be able to announce Stephen as my successor. He has a deep love and care for cricket and will be a wonderful ambassador for MCC. The Cowdrey Lecture he delivered last year was inspiring and showed the extent to which he understands the challenges and opportunities that both MCC and cricket face. He will bring a wealth of experience to the role and I hope he thoroughly enjoys his year,” said Connor.
