The month of March in 2018 has been etched into the memories as one of the gloomiest phases of Australian cricket. The likes of Steve Smith and David Warner, who are deemed to be two of the best players in their lineup, were slapped with suspensions. However, both of them have fought back and are currently plying their trade in the Global Canada T20 tournament.

While Warner is representing the Winnipeg Hawks, Smith is playing under Darren Sammy for the Toronto Nationals. To add to the duo’s delight they also may feature in Australia’s new T20 event involving the nation’s best grade teams. The extravaganza will take place in Adelaide on March 5 and 6. Two clubs each from Victoria and New South Wales will qualify for the event.

“They need to be managed”- Sutherland

Smith and Warner cannot play for Australia, Big Bash League and for New South Wales during their suspension period. Meanwhile, Tony Irish, the executive chairman of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) reckons that drafting them in for the T20 league can attract criticism from the players’ association.

However, he also believes that restricting the cricketers isn’t a solution and they will be standing against any unfair practice. “This problem can’t be solved by simply restricting players from playing in T20 leagues and FICA will continue to oppose any attempts to unfairly regulate or to restrict players,” he was quoted as saying in The West Australian.

James Sutherland, the former Chief of Cricket Australia (CA), previously mentioned that both the cricketers should be taken care of in a manner which will motivate them to not shelve their wishes of playing international cricket at a time when quite a bit of cricket is left in the two stalwarts.

“They need to be managed and regulated in such a way that the best cricketers still want to play international cricket. They aspire to that and they’re incentivised to do that. We don’t want to make it too easy for them to exit (international cricket) prematurely,” he iterated.
