Former Australian captain, Steve Smith might be back in action earlier than anyone expected, with the inaugural Global T20 Canada tournament to be held in Toronto in June-July. Previously, Smith, along with his ex-deputy David Warner was handed a 12-month ban each from all sorts of cricket for their involvement in the ball-tampering saga during the South Africa series.

The executor of the action, Cameron Bancroft was given a lighter ban of 9 months, owing to his age. This led to the withdrawal of contract from their IPL teams and missing out on the yearly cricketing extravaganza.

But something is always better than nothing, and the saying cannot be truer for the former skipper right now. As per a statement released by the International Cricket Council last week, both Smith and Warner are now allowed to play grade cricket for their respective clubs in Sydney. But latest developments report that Smith could be swinging the bat once again sooner than anyone expected, in fact as soon as in a little more than a month.

Global T20 Canada league as competitive as it gets

The Global T20 Canada was sanctioned by ICC in February 2018 and it is soon to be the first cricket franchise league to be played in North America. According to a report on cricket.com.au, Smith has been approached by the organisers of the new league to be a part of it. Cricket Australia has given the green signal for Smith, which means he can play a part in one of the six teams of Global T20 Canada if he decides to accept the offer.

The Global T20 Canada tournament will commence on June 28 and go on till July 15. For the maiden season, it has only 6 participants, but it is certainly expected to grow. The teams participating in the 2018 season are Caribbean All-Stars, Toronto Nationals, Montreal Tigers, Ottawa Royals, Vancouver Knights and Winnipeg Hawks.

The other two cricketers, Warner and Bancroft will also be back to the game soon. It is confirmed that Warner will be playing for Randwick Petersham, a grade cricket club based in Sydney. Bancroft, on the other hand, has got a special exemption from Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) to play in the Premier Cricket tournament for Willetton.
